About Product Portfolios, Products, Releases, and Features
The Calibo Accelerate platform lets you manage your product development cycle by creating a portfolio and adding multiple products, that deliver a common value to customers, under a single portfolio. Each product in a portfolio is divided into multiple features. Each feature is an individual piece of functionality, which when combined together with other features creates the complete product. The actual development work is done by adding phases to the features. Joining a release helps orchestrate the release of a feature and a product efficiently.
What are the different options?
After you create a product portfolio and add a product to it, you can add features and phases to the product depending on your requirement. You can also join a release that is part of a release train. Joining a release or adding a feature is optional, but you must add phases to each product. See Phases of a Product.
Refer to the diagram to understand the options that you can choose while creating a portfolio, products, features, and joining a release.
- Option 1 - Create a product portfolio and product. Add phases to the product.
- Option 2 - Create a product portfolio and product. Add features to the product and then add phases to the feature.
- Option 3 - Create a product portfolio, product, features. Add phases to the feature, and join a release.
Why should I join a release?
A complex product can be divided into multiple features. Each feature can join a release. At times features have a dependency on each other. This makes it important to monitor and track the release of features. Joining a release that is part of a release train, helps you to orchestrate releases, monitor the status of each release at a granular level, and manage dependencies efficiently.
Why should I add a feature to a product?
A feature is an independent piece of functionality within a product. Several features put together create the final product. For example you can create a feature each for UI, frontend and backend development of a product. These features can be managed concurrently for the release of the final product. Every feature has phases added to it, depending on the type of the feature.
